Ship Model Testing Center (Towing Tank)

South Side of Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM)
Project Director
Dr. Goutam Kumar Saha
Description

The proposed Ship Model Testing Centre (Towing Tank) will be used for conducting fundamental and applied research on the safety and technical advancement of inland, coastal water, and ocean transports in order to boost the economic development of Bangladesh. The proposed project, when established, will have the following objectives:

  • Conduct research and development on increasing the safety of passenger and cargo vessels in order to boost the rate of passenger and cargo transportation which will eventually influence on socio-economic development of the country
  • Determination of stability of vessels through model testing
  • Determination of Resistance and Propulsion Characteristics through model testing and design of safe and economic ship hull through experimentation
  • Contribution to the shipbuilding industry by providing expert services in ship design, stability, resistance, powering, and sea-keeping which will eventually save the spending of foreign currency and thus contribute to GDP
  • Eventually, the center will expand its research and working capacity on Maritime Industry and will achieve the status of Centre of Excellence
