Seminar on Exploring HDPE and Additive Manufacturing for Marine Applications
On 8 April 2026, the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) successfully organized a seminar on “Sustainable Polymer-Based Materials and Production Methods: High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Additive Manufacturing (AM)”. The session was delivered by Professor Dr. Gökdeniz Neşer, a faculty member of the Marine Technology Department at the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology, Dokuz Eylül University, Izmir, Turkey. He is a distinguished researcher with expertise in sustainable marine materials, polymer composites, additive manufacturing, ship recycling, and lifecycle assessment (LCA).
The faculty members, students, research fellows, academicians, and industry professionals attended the seminar. The program started with a recitation from the Holy Qur'an by Sajid Hossain, Assistant Professor at NAME, BUET. Dr. N. M. Golam Zakaria, Professor at NAME, gave the welcome speech. He spoke about the importance of international academic engagement and growing research collaborations. The seminar discussed High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) as a sustainable material for marine use. It highlighted its recyclability, easy production methods, and strong resistance to damage. The seminar ended with a Q&A session. Prof. Dr. Zobair Ibn Awal, Head of the Department of NAME, BUET, gave the closing remarks and appreciated the seminar’s academic value.
Before the seminar, Professor Neşer was given a guided tour of the department’s research facilities, including the Ship Model Testing Centre (SMTC), Hydrodynamics Laboratory, Structural Engineering Laboratory, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, and Underwater Robotics Laboratory. It facilitated productive discussions on research capabilities and potential areas for collaboration. Professor Neşer also engaged in an informal academic interaction with the department's postgraduate students, research fellows, and young faculty members.
The Department of NAME, BUET, sincerely acknowledges and appreciates the valuable contribution of Professor Dr. Gökdeniz Neşer. His visit is expected to further strengthen academic collaboration between BUET and Dokuz Eylül University.
